Everything you need to know about Canada’s Largest Online Mathematics Contest

You’ve may heard about it, but you don’t know exactly what Netmath’s Can You Math Challenge is. So here are some explanations!

Four years ago in Quebec, Netmath launched its first ever free and online mathematics contest for francophone students in elementary and high school. A collaborative initiative that was a great success, with thousands of participants in the schools of la Belle Province! This friendly competition between students is designed to foster the learning of mathematics in Canada, in a challenging and fun environment.

In 4 years, the competition has expanded. This year it’s taking place from May 1 to 5, in Quebec of course, but also in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and New Brunswick. What is more, the contest is open to Anglophone students for the first time!

Starting a little later than in previous years, Netmath’s Can You Math Challenge is a great opportunity to review the curriculum with joy and good humor just before the exams.

Who can participate?

The contest takes place exclusively in the classroom during school hours between 7am and 4pm.

It is intended for students from:

  • The 3rd year of elementary school to the 4th year of high school in Quebec;
  • Grades 3 to 10 in Ontario;
  • Grades 3 to 9 in Manitoba;
  • Grades 3 to 9 in Alberta;
  • Grades 3 to 9 in New Brunswick.

Teachers who would like their students to participate in the competition must register their classes on the site www.canyoumath.ca.

How does it work?

The contest is free of charges and runs for a week on the Netmath online platform from May 1 to 5, 2017. It can be taken any time during regular class hours.

To compete, students should log into their Netmath account, beforehand created if they don’t have one already. During a 30-minute test, students must correctly answer a number of math questions related to their level. Those who accumulate the highest score up to 250 points are awarded the winning title for themselves and potentially their class and school.

Don’t worry, if necessary, your pupils can take breaks and then resume where they were at any time of the week provided it’s during school hours.

To maximize everyone’s chances of success, the contest is preceded by a 6-week training camp to practice on Netmath.

The activities from the bootcamp and the contest will be in free-access on the Netmath platform.
